COPILOT OF FINOCHIETTI AT THE GRAND PRIX OF 1938

On October 18, 1938, the Grand Prix Argentino de Carreteras, which covered 7,343 kilometers, passed through 14 provinces and two governorates.
The announcement triggered the interest of a young Balcarce driver, Luis Finochietti, who got a Ford model 37 with two doors. Invite Juan Manuel Fangio to accompany him in the tough competition and naturally, one of the problems was the money to participate.
The friends make a collection to raise funds through residents of Balcarce and various events such as an athletic tournament and a film evening.
They collect $ 3511.10, a more than interesting figure since the costs of preparing the car to add up to $ 600 ($ 225 in shock absorbers, $ 200 for 3 covers and $ 175 in the "several" item). The final balance would give the sum of $ 4404.50 delivered to Finochietti and Fangio.
After several days of intense work, the Ford was ready and both left for Buenos Aires to start the Grand Prix, being dismissed by their friends who had collaborated in the set-up of the car until late at night in the workshop of Fangio.

In the draw, they received the number 28. The number 57 to Oscar A. Gálvez, who a year later began the duel that for years fascinated the fans of the most folkloric category of Argentine racing.

After the first stretch towards Santa Fe (512 km), he started with number 1 José Sergio Luna. A crowd accompanied the departure of the participants in Avenida Centenario de Nuñez when a few minutes later a torrential rain began. Osvaldo Parmigiani, who started last (number 126), would fulfill one of his best performances when he won that first stage at 117.8 km / h after overtaking a large number of machines in very difficult conditions. Except for Parmigiani, the immediate posts in this first stage were occupied by unknown pilots such as Faustino Corbella, Higinio Lo Valvo and Vicente García. Among the ten dropouts, Eduardo Pedrazzini was at the height of San Nicolás.
The binomial Finochietti- Fangio walked pretty well in the rain and managed to qualify in the nineteenth place in this first section. Two posts ahead were Oscar A. Gálvez.

Mud and rain accompanied the flyers in the second stage (705 km) of the Grand Prix won by the Neuquino Arturo Krusse at only 59 km / h. Parmigiani suffered a delay and Julio Pérez went on to lead the general. Luis Finochietti and Fangio are again in position 19 in this difficult stretch.

The third stage (643 km) begins in Resistencia towards Santiago del Estero. In the tip, Ricardo Risatti appears with Ford, who wins the stage followed by Ricardo López and Antonio Gauthier. But in the general, Julio Perez continues to lead by finishing fourth in the partial.
Many departures occurred in this section: 22, including Osvaldo Parmigiani with Ford. There are also Angel Lo Valvo and the Uruguayan Hector Supicci Sedes who arrived outside the time to final control.
Taking advantage of the long straights, Fangio drives the number 28 Ford, as Finochietti got tired and lost concentration. They alternate in driving and finish in eleventh place.
All Balcarce was following this action and the Commission was turning the money in the determined points.

Very dusty and complicated was the stage at La Quiaca (796 km), where Ricardo Lopez won and 31 pilots were on the road. Finochietti and Fangio continue to perform an acceptable performance and are located tenth seconds.
Ricardo Risatti, who had suffered a turnaround in the previous stage losing an hour, tries to recover and wins in the fifth to Tucumán and goes on to lead the general classification in front of Ricardo Lopez. In as much Finochietti - Fangio they occupy the sixth place.

From Tucumán to Córdoba (915 km). He walks very fast and Risatti wins at 78 km / h, despite the difficulties of the route. Keep heading the general.
The car 28, finished in 16th place in the stage and are advancing in the general. They do not have much final speed in their Ford.

The seventh stage joins Córdoba with Mendoza (848 km) and Arturo Krusse is the winner in front of Victorio Orsi. There remain 26 cars in the race and Finochietti - Fangio occupies a ninth place.

In the stretch to Santa Rosa (814 km), the binomial meets its best partial performance to qualify in fourth place. They drive the two in an alternative way, although Fangio does it for a longer time. Angel Pascuali wins in the partial and delayed Krusse and Julio Pérez. In general, Ricardo Risatti is strengthened in the first placement

The penultimate stage of Santa Rosa arrives at Tandil (809 km) and Risatti continues to accumulate differences in the general classification by prevailing in the partial at 108 km / h. Angel Pascuali excelled in more than two hours, which now occupied the second place after an intense fight with Ricardo Lopez until he was delayed at the end of the stage.

Among the dropouts was Oscar Gálvez. On the other hand Finochietti -Fangio occupied the thirteenth place.

The last stage from Tandil to La Plata (643 km) passed through Balcarce and when the binomial of car number 28 crossed the town, a crowd greeted his step amid the joy that meant to occupy the seventh place in the general classification and the sixth in the stage.
Felix Heredia won in the last stage and Ricardo Risatti secured the first place in the general classification.

Finochietti and Fangio added $ 1,800 in prizes and this increased the commission's collection from friends who supported them. "

The 1938 Grand Prix marked Fangio's debut in road tests, although
in this case as a companion.
